Day old Appenzeller Spitzhauben Baby Chicks

Hatching February to May.

Appenzeller Spitzhauben are interesting looking birds. These chickens are black and white speckled, with a 'V' shaped crest. Although not recognized by the American Poultry Association, the Appenzeller Spitzhauben is a chicken that will start conversations!

Production: They are very good medium to large size white egg layers.

Temperament: They are not flighty and are actually very friendly. These birds are independent, and generally intelligent. They are good foragers. Appenzeller Spitzhauben chickens will roost in trees when possible and require good fencing because they are good fliers. They do thrive in confined large pens or free range.

History: Appenzell is a region of Switzerland, and is where this breed of chicken was developed. Girls there, at one time, wore caps that came to a point at the top. The word “spitzhauben” is a German word that means “pointed cap,” so these chickens are literally “pointed caps from Appenzell.” Apenzellers are the national breed of Switzerland.

Colors: Appenzeller Spitzhaubens are silver spangled which means white with black markings that almost look like polka-dots. In the UK there are black spitzhaubens.

Conservation Status:  not listed. In the United States the Appenzeller Spitzahauben is a rare breed of chicken, but these birds are easily available in other parts of the world.

Body Type: This is a sturdy breed chicken, well suited to living in the mountains. It climbs well, but it’s most distinctive feature is the forward-facing comb that stands up straight. It has large nostrils and brown eyes.

Weight: Rooster 5 lbs, Hen 4 lbs, Cockerel 4 lbs, Pullet 3 lbs

APA Class: not recognized
