The green sheen of the solid black plumage Black Australorp Chicken presents a truly beautiful sight, particularly when the sun is reflecting off the plumage. The Black Australorp is docile and quiet. The Black Australorp hens are very hardy and can be expected to weigh about 5.2 pounds when mature. The skin is pinkish white. Eggs: Black Australorps can be expected to lay 200+ nice brown eggs per year. History: Originated in Australia. The Black Australorp Chickens were started by taking Black Orpingtons from England to Australia in the 1890s and 1900s. In Australia it was better for them to have eggs so they bred the Australorp to be smaller and better egg producers. The Black Australorp was added to the APA Standard in 1929.
