Blue Andalusians are attractive chickens that lay lots of eggs and enjoy foraging.
Any blue variety ordered from Purely Poultry may include chicks with black, blue or splash plumage patterns.
Production: You can expect about 160 white eggs annually from a Blue Andalusian hen. They also lay well during colder weather. While these birds don’t grow to a great size, they do make particularly tasty table birds.
Temperament: Blue Andalusians do not do well in captivity because they prefer foraging. Unlike some other active breeds, Andalusians are known to be quite gentle.
History: Blue Andalusians originated in Spain, in Andalusia. As with other ancient breeds, its history is not especially clear. We do know that they were first exhibited in Britain in 1853, and were imported into the United States around the same time.
Blue chickens of any variety do not breed true. Usually the offspring of two blue chickens will be 50% blue, 25% black, and 25% splash, and this is true for Blue Anadalusians as well. The American Poultry Association admitted Blue Andalusians into the Standard of Perfection in 1874, and Blue is still the only color recognized by the organization.
Colors: Blue Andalusians are blue, black or splash. They are tightly and closely feathered, and have white earlobes like other Mediterranean breeds. They have white skin and clean legs.
