The Mallard Duck is the duck breed from which all breeds of domestic ducks, except the Muscovy, originate. Mallard ducks can fly very well. Mallard ducks retain many wild instincts and can escape predation. For show quality judges have said our ducks are "too chunky." The Mallard duck has a calm temprament and very good mothering ability. Average lifespan in the wild: 5 to 10 years
Size: 20 to 26 inches
Weight: 2.25 to 2.5 lbs

Species: Anas platyrhynchos is a dabbling duck
American Poultry Association Class: Bantam Duck Class
Conservation Status: Most common duck in the world

Production: Mallard ducks have lean, delicate flavored meat. Our Mallard ducks lay 100-140 duck eggs per year 65-75 grams per egg.

Colors: The Gray Mallard drake is unmistakable, with a green head, black rear end and a yellowish orange bill tipped with black. The female Mallard duck is light brown. However, both the female and male Mallards have distinct purple speculum edged with white, prominent in flight or at rest (though temporarily shedded during the annual summer molt). In non-breeding (eclipse) plumage the Mallard drake becomes drab, looking more like the female Mallard, but still distinguishable by its yellow bill and reddish breast.

Mallards are perhaps the most widely recognized of all waterfowl species. Males especially exhibit rich and deep colors and plumage and make them very popular. Wild Mallards are common in almost all parts of North America, making them very popular as pets for a wide variety of waterfowl enthusiasts. Mallards are relatively small birds and can fly handily. Wild Mallards are migratory birds and are quite adept at long distance travel. If you are looking for a larger bird, we recommend the Rouen, which is a bit calmer, and is too large to fly. These Domesticated Mallards are raised for a variety of purposes including pets, hunting game, exotic meat products, and showing ducks. Like most waterfowl, it's best to acquire Mallards when they are very young so that they develop an inherent comfort around humans. When you order your Mallard Ducklings from eFowl.com, you will receive them when they are just 24-48 hours old.

Mallard Ducks are thought to be the most abundant duck species on Earth.
