Hatching February to July.

Docile, friendly, and happy to stay at home, these Barred Cochin Chickens are perfect for the backyard poultry keeper.

Production: These chickens are fair egg layers, producing about 150-180 eggs per year that are small for their body size. They lay well during the winter months.

Temperament: A good fit for families with children, Barred Cochin Chickens are known for their sweet disposition. The hens have strong maternal instincts, setting, and raising chicks well. They are considered the best breed for hatching out turkey and duck eggs.

History: Originally bred in China, Cochin Chickens came to England and the United States in the 1880s where they helped fuel a national obsession with chickens. Queen Victoria is said to have treasured Cochin Chickens.

Color: The Barred Cochin Chickens are beautiful, with light and dark colors alternating in parallel lines along each feather, making for a beautifully striped bird.

Livestock Conservancy Status: Watch

Body type: This is a big chicken that looks larger than it is. In addition to the large and round body, the Barred Cochin Chickens have an abundance of soft feathers with down fiber underneath. The hens also have what is called a cushion, or a large fluffy mass of feathers at the base of the tail. The feathers extend down the legs to cover their feet.
