Black Laced Red Wyandotte Chickens Details

Day Old Black Laced Red Wyandotte Baby Chicks

Hatching February through August

Wyandotte chickens are an all-time favorite American heritage breed. Wyandottes are large but compact brown egg laying chickens. They were developed in the cold and temperamental Appalachian mountains. Wyandottes have chunky rose combs and a sturdy looking body. They would make a wonderful addition to any sustainable farm, homestead, backyard, or even urban flock. Black Laced Red Wyandotte Chickens are also strikingly attractive with their dark mahogany reds with black lacing pattern.

Black Laced Red Wyandotte Chickens are friendly and calm. They are large and do not fly well, but do particularly well in areas where winters are very cold.

Production: Black Laced Red Wyandotte Chickens are dual purpose birds - developed in early America for both meat and eggs. Males can be grown out for meat purposes relatively efficiently. Skin coloring is yellow. Hens are very good egg layers, laying between 175 to almost 275 eggs per year in their prime. Egg coloring is brown. Hens occasionally go broody.

Temperament: Black Laced Red Wyandotte Chickens can be great mothers and are good foragers. They are also a relatively quiet chicken. They are very adaptable and do fine in confined as well as pastured environments. These birds are great for backyard flocks and setting where neighbors are close.

History: The original origins of the Wyandotte Breed are unclear, but it seems that the laced-patterned Spangled Hamburg and chunky Brahma most have played some part in their development. Wyandottes got their name in 1883 when they were first admitted into the APA. The name, Wyandotte, is from a Native American tribe that was prevalent in Appalachian areas of upstate New York and Ontario, Canada.

APA Class: American

Color Description: The Black Laced Red Wyandotte Chicken has dark red-brown or mahogany feathers that are laced around the edges with black. When compared to Golden Laced Wyandottes or Blue Laced Black Wyandottes they are much much darker. They have yellow feet and legs. Tails are black with a green sheen. Pinkish rose colored combs and wattles are smaller and kept close to the body for cold hardiness.
