HOW TO KEEP FLIES UNDER CONTROL IN YOUR COOP

HOW TO KEEP FLIES UNDER CONTROL IN YOUR COOP

Chickens bring all kinds of things into your life.  Eggs, Joy. Silly antics,  And flies. poop attracts flies, and since chickens are little pooping machines,  the fly population will increase by a gazillion the first summer you have chickens.
A great fly-control strategy involves both repelling and trapping flies.  No fly repellent works 100% of the time, so the trap is great for nabbing the ones that escape the repellent.

Fly repellent
You can make your own natural fly repellent by missing the following together in a 16-ounce spray bottle
1 cup vinegar
15 drops lavender essential oil
10 drop peppermint essential oil
10 drops basil essential oil
10 drops rosemary essential oil
Fill to just below the top with water and add 1Tablespoon dish soap
Shake the mix together before you use it.  Spray it around your coop and run and on bedding. (Just a mist)  Unlike other synthetic mixes, it won’t last long. Not even a week. So you will need to re-spray every few days.
Spraying more often with natural ingredients is far better than using something with harsh chemicals. So the natural way is preferred by most of us poultry lovers.

Fly Traps
There are a lot of different styles of fly traps on the market.  Everything from sticky strips to electronic traps.  Many people prefer the fly magnet.  This can probably be found at your local farm store. When it is set up in the yard, it is amazing how many flies it traps in a short period of time.  It doesn’t smell good, so it isn’t suitable to use inside or in an enclosed space, but it’s perfect to use in an open-air run
