Tragopan Ornamental Pheasants
I was recently asked to write an article on the Tragopan ornamental pheasant. I have been researching trying to find out more about them. Well, all I can find are facts. Facts are useful but not very interesting. I needed to find a reason why anyone would raise and own this bird. So I started with finding a picture. Wow! That’s where I found thee top reason for owning one of these creatures. Their BEAUTY. What an amazingly beautiful Bird!
So, now that the pictures have spoken for their beauty, Ill just jot down a few more reasons bird lovers raise pheasants.
1. MANY PEOPLE RAISE ORNAMENTAL PHEASANTS TO RELEASE THEM INTO THE WILD
I did this some years ago with Bob White Quail. It is truly a rewarding and exciting experience to feel like you are giving back to nature. I didn’t see a difference made back then, but some years later I certainly do. I’m sure the same can be done with some of these beautiful birds that are becoming rare. It may take a few years but it has to start somewhere.
2. THEY ADD CHARACTER AND BEAUTY TO YOUR HOMESTEAD
They are beautiful and have their personalities and ways of doing life within their flocks. It can be very entertaining watching young roosters change from gangly teenagers to regal birds full of color.
3. THEY ARE PROFICIENT EGG LAYERS
At the peak of their season, they can lay an egg a day. And yes, you can eat pheasant eggs. But if you have an incubator and a rooster, you can hatch out chicks!
4. BECAUSE THEY ARE A GOOD FOOD SOURCE
All we need to say here is they are tasty.
