Unusual & Interesting Chicken Coops

There are a few essentials for any chicken coop: it must be dry, well-ventilated, secure and have a place for the birds to roost safely. Ideally, a coop will also be easy to clean, have an area for storing food, and be in a location that is convenient. The basics are easy and there are lots of tutorials and books available for people who want to DIY. There are also plenty of companies and sites, including Purely Poultry, that sell pre-made coops.

If you want something as unique as your birds, though, the sky is the limit. As long as you include the basic necessities, you can be as creative as you want with your coop. Here are a few we found while browsing the internet that are unusual and interesting:

First, we have “The Breed Retreat.” This is one fancy coop! Dutch designer Frederik Roijé created this “architectural hen house to breed and retreat.”

We learned less about this gorgeous coop, but it is so pretty we wanted to share. You can see the letter that accompanied the photo on Lloyd’s Blog:

The folks at Egganic have designed this “stealth coop” that masquerades as a trash can. Unusual, to say the least:

Finally, adding whimsy and practicality equals…the Nogg! This egg-shaped chicken coop was designed by Matthew Hayward and Nadia Turen and is produced in the UK.

As you can see, there is no reason your chicken coop has to be boring, or even like any other coop in the world. If your coop is special or unusual, we’d love to see photos. Post them on our Facebook page if you’d like to share!
