Blue Orpington Chickens Details

Blue Orpington Chickens are gorgeous balls of fluff. Being a dual purpose breed, docile, and colorful, this variety and breed is a great choice for the backyard chicken owner.

Production: Blue Orpingtons are dual purpose birds for meat and eggs. The hens lay between 175-200 eggs a given season. The eggs are a light brown tint.

Temperament: The Blue Orpingtons are known for their docile behavior. They are gentle birds and wonderful for the backyard flock. Hens can go broody and raise their own young if given the habitat to do so.

History: William Cook created the first Orpington chicken breed by combining many breeds together to get a good dual purpose breed. This Orpington was black in color. The color blue was not popular until 1910. It is a dilution of the Black Orpington.

Colors: The blue orpington is blue slate in color. The breast feathers have a nice lacing that is very defined. Their body is also a slate plumage with the defined lacing as well. They have blue fluff on their thighs and are clean legged.

Livestock Conservancy Status: Recovering

Body Type: Blue Orpingtons are heavy birds. They have a broad body and low stance with short legs. They contain many feathers that make them appear larger than they are.

Weights: Cockerel 8.5 lbs, Pullet 7 lbs
