Although ringnecks are the most common type of pheasant produced for gamebird hunting, raising for release, and also dog training, Purely Poultry's Hatchery Choice Ringneck Chicks are a rare find as they are a multi-colored releasable variety. These pheasants are bred by an active Army Reservist right here in Wisconsin, our Hatchery Choice Ringneck pheasants are hardy, healthy, and especially active. They are the ideal option for gamebird hunters or pheasant connoisseurs alike.
Range: Originally, the Chinese pheasant was found in Asia. Now, populations have been introduced all over the world.
Habitat: Because the native range of the Chinese Ringneck Pheasant encompasses the largest continent on Earth, and because these birds are found all over the world, they have adapted to thrive as captive birds for gamebird raising worldwide.
Description: While this package is a mix of Buff Ringneck, Melanistic Mutant Ringneck, Cinnamon Ringneck and Chinese Ringneck, the coloration of ringneck males is generally predominant in browns and golds. These varieties will vary from cinnamon in color to green, purple, whites and buffs with various markings. In all varieties, there is there is a distinct ring of red skin around the eye, the wattle is distinctively red, and they have a ring about the neck.
Males have long tails, that average around 20 inches in length. Ringneck pheasant males will weigh around 2.5 lbs and females about 2.0 lbs.
Females are much less showy, being brown and golden all over, and being generally smaller.
Status in the wild: The standard Chinese Ringneck species is considered "common to abundant" and is in no danger of disappearing.
Status in aviculture: While Ringneck Pheasants are commonly raised in captivity for a variety of reasons.
Worldwide, pheasant is considered a delicacy and is featured in many fine dining establishments, so small farmers and flock keepers sometimes raise ringnecks for food production, we actually have a Jumbo Ringneck Pheasant that may be an option.
Being the most hunted fowl in the world, many people raise pheasants for release for hunting purposes. For this purpose, Purely Poultry recommends this mixed variety as they are a bit more docile than a standard Chinese Ringneck and would require less space but are still releasable and provide a fun hunt. We do recommend that you have as little contact with the birds as possible prior to hunt.
