As one of the oldest breeds of chicken in the world, the origins of the Polish are lost to the mists of time. However, archaeologists did discover a skull that looks exactly like the skull of the modern Polish on a dig in the UK, giving us reason to believe they were originally inhabitants of that region. No one can know for sure, though.

One thing that is known is that they are not originally from Poland. Polish chickens are so-named because their crests resemble the hats once worn by the Polish military. They have been raised in Poland for many, many years and were especially popular with nobles.

The majority of the work to standardize the breed was done in Germany, Poland, and Holland. A Dutchman named Arie Boland was in large part responsible for preserving many of the color varieties.
