Day Old Golden Duckwing Phoenix Baby Chicks

Hatching February to July.

The Golden Duckwing Phoenix is a beautiful and exotic long-tailed ornamental chicken breed whose ancestors graced Japanese imperial gardens. This elegant bird was developed for exhibition and is prized by both expert enthusiasts and proud owners of pet chickens. The breed is a popular choice wherever you find chickens for sale. Adding a few-day-old baby Golden Duckwing Phoenix chicks to your backyard coop assures that your flock will grow into an eye-catching and enviable one.

Production: Egg production is low. A typical hen averages about one egg per week. The eggs are small to medium in size and are colored cream, white, or slightly tinted.

Temperament: This breed’s personality is variable. Generally, they are docile and easy to handle, but some may be restless or eccentric. They tolerate confinement well.

History: The enchanting Phoenix shares genetics and history with the Japanese Onagadori long-tailed chicken. The Golden Duckwing is a recognized color variation in the Phoenix breed. The Phoenix was originally developed from the Onagadori by Hugo du Roi, the first president of the German Poultry Association. The name "Phoenix" was reportedly given to the breed because of its relative hardiness after out-crossing compared to the delicate constitution of its imported ancestors. The breed has been known in America since the 1920s.

While the tail feathers of the Phoenix do not reach the lengths represented the famed drawings of the ancient Onagadori, Phoenix tails reach two to five feet and the saddle reaches 12 to 18 inches. They can reach this impressive length if properly nurtured and maintained. Special care is required for birds to reach their full aesthetic potential.

Color Description: The coloration of the Golden Phoenix is bright, alluring, and elegant. The male has a golden head with yellow or gold hackles. The saddle area is a warm or dark amber color, and the tail, thighs, and chest are solid black with sickles of gold.
Females have black feathers with golden highlights on the backs of their necks while the front of the neck is reddish amber. The abdomen of the female is red, and the back and wings are various shades of brown.

Livestock Conservancy Status: Threatened.

Body Type: Mature birds are single-combed with a pheasant-like body, non-feathered legs, and four toes. They are notable for their long saddle hackle and tail feathers.

Standard Weights: Rooster 5.5 lbs, Hen 4 lbs, Cockerel 4.5 lbs, Pullet 3.5 lbs

Classification: The American Poultry Association recognizes the Phoenix in the Any Other Standards Breeds Class.
