Appenzeller Spitzhauben are interesting looking birds. These chickens are black and white speckled, with a 'V' shaped crest. Although not recognized by the American Poultry Association, the Appenzeller Spitzhauben is a chicken that will start conversations!

Appenzell is a region of Switzerland, and is where this breed of chicken was developed. Girls there, at one time, wore caps that came to a point at the top. The word “spitzhauben” is a German word that means “pointed cap,” so these chickens are literally “pointed caps from Appenzell.” Apenzellers are the national breed of Switzerland.

Appenzeller Spitzhaubens are silver spangled which means white with black markings that almost look like polka-dots. In the UK there are black spitzhaubens.
