Range: From Canada to Mexico, and from Nevada, Idaho, and Utah west to California

Habitat: Varied. Valley quail thrive in a variety of habitats across their range from arid deserts to dense forests.

Description: Valley quail have a teardrop-shaped black crest, yellow feathers near the base of the bill, white stripes along the throat and above the eye and their breasts and upper backs are bluish-gray.

Status in the wild: Common

Status in aviculture: Common. These birds do well in any climate and are not difficult to raise.

Breeding Season: April to June

Clutch Size: 12-14 eggs

Incubation Period: 23 days

Miscellaneous Notes: This is the official state bird of California.
