Day Old Call Ducklings

Call ducklings ship starting in Late March through June. We start taking orders in late January or February for the upcoming seasons.

Call Ducks are the darlings of the poultry yard - and definitely the cutest of all ducks! Although originally bred for hunting purposes, specifically as live 'duck decoys,' Call Ducks are used only as pets and barnyard companions now. They are the smallest of all duck breeds, and their rounded cheeks, great big dark eyes, and short little bills give them a sweet appearance, looking like toy ducks. They are entertaining, active, and very friendly.

Although extra care should be taken with the tiny ducklings to ensure that they stay dry and warm, once they are mature, Call Ducks are very hardy.

Call Ducks are very tame and great with children. They are extremely active and animated and are a lot of fun to watch. The females are very loud though, so be aware that neighbors may find them annoying and that you may not want to place your Call Duck enclosure close to your bedroom window. Their chattiness is very cute, and they will even interact with humans. If alarmed, Call Ducks can fly and are exceptional fliers.

Call Ducks were developed in the mid-1800s in Great Britain supposedly from old Dutch lines of Coy or Decoy Ducks. The small size was bred into them so they could lure larger wild ducks into funnel traps and then be able to fit through the trap exit hole and escape the trap, leaving the larger ducks inside. They were bred for their calling. Their call is very high pitched, carries well over long distances, luring wild ducks to get within range of hunters. The original Call Duck lines were made up of hard-working birds with strong working abilities. In the 1900s the rules and popularity of hunting were in a state of change, and Call Ducks were becoming rarer and rarer. However, around the middle of the 20th century, interest in Call Ducks was revived, and today they are one of the most popular breeds of duck for exhibition and show.

Colors: Our blue and black calls will have a varying amount of white in the bibs. Some will be solid Blue or Black Calls. The solid color or size of the bib is a hatchery choice only.

Blue Bibbed Call Ducklings - A striking color combination, this Call Duck is almost all slate blue color, except for a white bib-like patch on the front of the chest that resembles a heart shape. There are also a few outer wing feathers in white. The slate blue color over the body and wings is textured in lacing and reflects green with light. The eyes and bill are dark, and the legs are brownish orange.
Black Call Ducklings - This color variation is a pure black duck with dark bill, legs, and feet. The black reflects greens and purple colors with an effect very similar to the Cayuga or East Indies Duck breeds.
Gray Call Ducklings - Colored like the wild mallard, Gray Call Ducklings have a green head, white ring around the neck, a reddish chest, white belly, and gray back. They have blue and white bars on their wings. They have orange feet and beaks.
Pastel Call Ducklings - Mallard duck patterning, but with different muted pastel colors. Males have powder blue-gray heads, white-collar bands, and rosy brown chests, that fade into lavender. The body and wings are light fawn and silver colors with blue overlaid with golden and light tan colors. Bills are brownish-green, and eyes are dark brown. Females are dove-colored with darker bills. Both sexes have orange/salmon-colored legs and feet.
White Call Ducklings - This is the original Call Duck color - a pure snowy white, which beautifully accentuates the rounded lines of the breed.
Snowy Call Ducklings - A variation on the Gray pattern, the snowy Call Duck coloration is striking. Males are similar to Gray coloring, with emerald green heads and white-collar bands, but with abundant white lacing that highlights the wine-colored chest feathers, the silver, and tawny wings and back feathers, and even dark wing and tail feathers. Their bill is greenish-yellow, and their legs are orange. Females are just as striking but with muted brown and gold colors. Their head is fawn, and their entire plumage is stippled and laced with intricate and complex patterning of contrasting colors. Eyes are dark brown; bills are brownish-orange, and legs and feet are orange.
Assorted - Assorted means you will receive at least 2 different colors; hatchery choice means you will receive what we have available, which could be an assortment or could be all of one color.
