Runner Ducks are one of the most unusual and striking fowl that one could find in a backyard flock. They hold themselves extremely upright with a tall and penguin-like posture. These pure black birds have a greenish-olive sheen and look particularly striking as a small group in the garden. Black Runner Ducks have brown eyes and dark coal-colored feet, legs, and bill.

Runner Ducks are an ancient breed. They were imported from Indonesia into Great Britain and Europe in the fourteenth century but have appeared in Asian records for hundreds of years before that. In Indonesia and Asia, Runner Ducks have been raised and bred specifically for egg laying abilities and for the controlling of pests in rice paddies.  

Runner Ducks are fun and whimsical but with a solid purpose for the farm or homestead. These Blue Runner Ducks are a deep, dark charcoal gray color, and look simply gorgeous as a flock. Males tend to be a slightly darker shade of slate gray than females. Bills and feet are also gray in color. Runner Ducks hold themselves in a very upright, penguin-like position. They are active and energetic and keep to a tight flock, which accentuates their funny vertical appearance. 

The Runner Duck is an ancient duck breed. Runner Ducks originated in Indonesia and were bred for two main purposes - prolific egg laying and controlling pests in the rice paddies. They were imported into Great Britain and Europe in the early 1500s. The Chocolate variation was admitted into the APA in 1977.
