For centuries, the Egyptian Fayoumi Chicken has been raised by farmers who live on the banks of the Nile River. This ornamental bird is slender, active, and agile and brings its owners great joy.

Centuries ago, Egyptian farmers began raising the Fayoumi for egg production. They are named for the Faiyum Governorate which is located southwest of Cairo. For owners, it may be a novelty to know that the same chickens they’re raising in their backyard are almost the same ones that were being raised while Pharos ruled Egypt.

After WWII, the bird made its way to the United States by way of Iowa State University’s poultry genetics program. Once there, it was used as a lab animal for many years until researchers acknowledged that it was an excellent layer.

Colors: The Egyptian Fayoumi displays a breathtaking color pattern of black, white, and silver hackle and bars. These bold colors are accented by an incredibly bright red wattle and comb while the legs are either slate blue or willow green. When chicks first hatch, expect them to be a bold brown with, white and black accents.
