Baby Blue Swedish Ducklings

Hatching February to November.

Whether you need a good "utility duck" that can provide eggs and meat, or you are looking for an unusual and beautiful addition to your flock, the Blue Swedish duck is likely to meet your needs. This gorgeous bird makes quite a visual impact.

Production: A good layer, the Blue Swedish will lay about 130-180 eggs per year and reaches table weight by about 16 weeks.

Temperament: Swedish ducks are generally calm, but also shy. They are excellent foragers and do well with plenty of space.

History: Blue Swedish ducks originated in the country of Pomerania, which at that time, was a part of Sweden. Farmers in Europe believed that blue ducks were harder for predators to see, so these birds have a long history.

They were first imported to the United States in the late 1800s and were added to the American Poultry Association's Standard of Perfection in 1904.

Only Blue Swedish ducks are used for exhibition purposes, but they do not breed true. In other words, when a blue drake and a blue duck mate, only 50% of the offspring will be blue. Of the other half, 25% will be black and 25% will be splashed. The black offspring are known as Black Swedish ducks, and we sell them separately.

To successfully breed true Blue Swedish, you must breed Splashed with Blacks. Obtaining the correct blue color can be challenging. However, if you want a duck as a pet, for eggs, or meat, the Blue Swedish is an excellent choice.

Colors: The Blue Swedish is a bluish slate color, with a white bib front and center. Males have a darker blue head and a slightly greenish tint to the bill, while females are the same color all over, including the bill. There are also Black Swedish ducks and Splashed, or Silver Swedish ducks, neither of which are good for exhibition, but both of which make fine pets or utility ducks. Any blue variety ordered from Purely Poultry may include chicks with black, blue, or splash plumage patterns.

Livestock Conservancy Status: Watch, which means the census counted fewer than 10 primary breeding flocks.

Body Type: The Blue Swedish is similar to the Rouen in size and shape. It is a medium-sized duck that is comfortable on the water and land.

Standard Weights: Old Male 8 lbs, Old Female 7 lbs, Young Male 6.5 lbs, Young Female 5 lbs

Classification: American Poultry Association Class: Medium Duck Class
