The Phoenix was originally developed from the Onagadori by Hugo du Roi, the first president of the German Poultry Association. The name "Phoenix" was reportedly given to the breed because of its relative hardiness after out-crossing compared to the delicate constitution of its imported ancestors. The breed has been known in America since the 1920s.

While the tail feathers of the Phoenix do not reach the lengths represented the famed drawings of the ancient Onagadori, Phoenix tails reach two to five feet and the saddle reaches 12 to 18 inches.
