Mottled Houdan Chickens Details

Day Old Mottled Houdan Baby Chicks

Hatching February to July.

Mottled Houdans are unusual, beautiful birds that are also quite useful.

Production: There are mixed reports regarding the productivity of Houdans. The Livestock Conservancy says they are "excellent" layers, while several other sources say that they are "fair" layers. Today most people who raise Houdans do so for their characters and ornamental qualities. Years ago Houdans were also great meat birds however since then they are now much too small.

Temperament: Mottled Houdans are known to be fairly calm despite the fact their crests limit their vision.

History: Mottled Houdans originated in France, around Normandy. While no one is certain which breeds went into their development, the fact they have crests, beards, muffs, and a fifth toe offers some clues.

They were quite common at one time but never gained huge popularity in England or the United States. In France, they are well known for the quality of their meat but are almost always raised as pets or ornamentals in the US.

Colors: As the name implies, Mottled Houdans are mottled with black and white feathers all over.

Livestock Conservancy Status: Watch

Body Type: Houdans have relatively short legs and rectangular bodies. They have crests, beards, and muffs, as well as a fifth toe. Their wattles and V-shaped combs tend to be small and are hidden by the abundance of feathers on their heads and faces.

Standard Weights: Rooster 8 lbs, Hen 6.5 lbs, Cockerel 7 lbs, Pullet 5.5 lbs

APA Class: Continental
