Red Shoulder Yokohama Chickens

Red Shoulder Yokohama Chickens Details

Day Old Red Shoulder Yokohama Baby Chicks

Hatching February to July.

Red Shoulder Yokohamas are simply gorgeous. Elegant, eye-catching, and beautiful, having them wander your yard is like having a living sculpture!

Production: Yokohamas are most often raised as pets for their beauty. They are not great layers, tend to go broody, and are not large enough to be useful as meat birds.

Temperament: Yokohamas are known to be tame.

History: From Japan to Paris, to Germany, Yokohamas took a twisted route to the western world. The first Yokohamas were Minohikis, on display at a public garden in Paris in 1864. They were labeled as Yokohamas because that is the port they were shipped from.

Enthusiastic German fanciers attempted to import more, but after two attempts, only males had survived the arduous journey. The Germans, in an attempt to broaden the gene pool for the breed, began crossing the original Minohiki males with Malaysians, Common Games, Sumatras, and other long-tailed poultry. The result was the modern Yokohamas.

No one is quite sure when the first Yokohamas arrived in the United States, but the Red Shoulder Yokohama was virtually unknown here until the 1970s. They were accepted into the American Poultry Association's Standard of Perfection in 1981. With their amazingly long tails, they make fantastic exhibition birds.

Colors: The Red Shoulder Yokohama has a red breast, and red shoulders, but white hackles and white, long tail feathers. They also have yellow legs and skin, and a red walnut comb.

Livestock Conservancy Status: Critical. Dedicated breeders are needed to bring this breed's population numbers back into a healthy range.

Body Type: Yokohamas are generally small with an upright stance and very long tail feathers.

Standard Weights: Rooster 4.5 lbs, Hen 3.5 lbs, Cockerel 4 lbs, Pullet 3 lbs

APA Class: All Other Standard Breeds
