The Leghorn is a wonderful egg laying breed. Being prolific and heat tolerant, the Leghorn makes a wonderful addition to the backyard flock!

Production: White Leghorns lay approximately 280 white eggs in a given year. Some strains have been known to lay 300-320 eggs in a year. They have a very good feed to egg conversion ratio.

Livestock Conservancy Status: Recovering

Temperament: The leghorn is a flighty breed therefore a confined housing is necessary. They do not make good mothers nor setters since they have been bred to lay a significant number of eggs each year.

History: The White Leghorn originated from Italy, brought to America in the 1820s, and then its qualities were further developed in England. They were imported back to America and has been the most popular egg laying breed since. They were admitted to the Standard of Perfection in 1874.

APA Class: Mediterranean

Colors: The White Leghorn is a white bird with a red single comb and long legs.

Standard Weights: Rooster 6, Hen 4.5 lbs, Cockerel 5 lbs, Pullet 4 lbs Started birds will weigh significantly less.
